In all of the years PoliticalArena has listened to oral arguments at the Supreme Court, we have never heard anything like this.
While politically motivated judges are willing to accept arguments thar are pure sophistry to meet their political ends, the Supreme Court simply wasn’t having it today in the oral hearing about Colorado trying to keep President Trump off the ballot.
What is sophistry?
The original Sophists were ancient Greek teachers of rhetoric and philosophy prominent in the 5th century B.C. In their heyday, these philosophers were considered adroit in their reasoning, but later philosophers (particularly Plato) described them as sham philosophers, out for money and willing to say anything to win an argument. Thus sophist (which comes from Greek sophistēs, meaning "wise man" or "expert") earned a negative connotation as "a captious or fallacious reasoner." Sophistry is reasoning that seems plausible on a superficial level but is actually unsound, or reasoning that is used to deceive.
Think of sophistry to be highly sophisticated BS coming from a con-man or a dishonest lawyer.
The Justices, even the leftist ones, ripped the Colorado Democrat’s arguments to pieces.
After having listened to the videos above, any reasonable reader can understand what kind of judges in Colorado bought the nonsense arguments that Jason Murray, the Democrat lawyer, was pushing.
