We have all seen the ads. The cheap devices they sell on the internet to self-diagnose your car. After purchase you plug their cheap dongle in the computer diagnostics port under the dash which is called an “OBD2 port” and download the associated app on your phone. The cheap ones are just that, CHEAP.
There are also similar devices that your insurance company will want to put on your car to monitor your driving habits for a small discount. It is NOT worth it.
The OBD2 port goes directly to your engine computer and if the dongle is low quality or goes defective, do you think the insurance company, or the cheap car monitoring device manufacturer is going to pay the bill?
Never put in a device that is supposed to be placed in the OBD2 port all the time. You are asking for trouble. Only use it for diagnostic purposes with a quality OBD2 scan tool.
