How Russia and China View Geo-Political Security from Their Point of View
This article is not designed to “Schill” for Russia or the CCP. What it is designed to do is explain to readers that we do not live in a unipolar world and that there are more points of view than those pushed by corporate media. Call it playing “Devil’s advocate” if you wish, but the truth is that there is little understanding among common Westerners of how Russia and China view the geo-political threats around them.
And whether you view Russia and/or China as good guys or bad guys, even bad guys have national Security interests. Let’s walk a mile in their shoes and see what we discover.
CHINA
Examine the map of China below. All areas marked or underlined in red are what China perceives as “Western” or Islamic threats.
Going clockwise, off China’s eastern border is Russian East Manchuria, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Philippines and the island chain leading to Australia. Continuing clockwise on land you have not just India, but Vietnam that today has genuinely warm relations with the West.
The Islamic World borders China on the west. While China has been desperate to prevent Islam from taking hold along its border province, they have been less than successful. Russia of course controls the northern half of the Asian continent.
The bulk of China’s imported oil and gas move through the Malacca Strait which the Australian Navy, Indian Navy, or United States Navy could easily blockade. Japan is building a blue water navy. The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue is essentially designed to keep China in a tight geopolitical box.
We are well aware that the China has taken control of Hong Kong, but in the event of a global conflict the people of Hong Kong would certainly side with the West and thus will remain a national security threat to China for generations to come.
Russia took much of East Manchuria away from China in 1898 effectively cutting it off from the Sea of Japan.
China has always viewed Russia as a Western power as Moscow has always identified itself with Western European culture which was not squashed even during the time of the Soviet Union. Very foolishly the Biden Administration and the EU have pushed Russia and China together diplomatically and geo-politically. This is exactly what President Trump was working to avoid.
China has a government that we view as truly wicked and would like to see go away, but one would be foolish to think that China has no concerns by the fact that they are essentially surrounded. In the case of a global conflict navally are quite blocked in.
Russia
Putin invaded parts of Georgia! He must be a madman! Putin Invades Crimea! He must be mad! Putin invaded parts of Ukraine! Is there no end to the madness? But they all have something in common.
Crimea, parts of Georgia, and much of Ukraine have areas that bypass geological barriers that could give NATO a virtually unobstructed invasion path into European Russia.
But PoliticalArena, anyone would be crazy to think the West would invade Russia! That would be your position and ours, but this article seeks to show the Russian perspective. United States Senators saying that the goal of supporting the war in Ukraine is to remove Putin from power likely serves to convince him that his fears are correct.
Using a simple Google search, Russian controlled territory has been invaded from Western Europe eight times since 1605. The invasions of Napolean, WWI and WWII had an incredible impact on Russian culture and does to this day as the number of dead they suffered amounted to repeated human catastrophe.
The maps below make Putin’s geo-security intentions all too clear:
Putin is obviously working to limit and/or control the geopolitical choke points Western powers have or could possibly use to make a move against Moscow. While we are certainly not defending Putin’s invasion of sovereign nations, it must be understood that this is likely the geo-security situation as Putin understands it. He seeks to make any foreign invasion from NATO more difficult.
One of the problems Westerners fall into is the notion that we live in a unipolar world where Russia, China, or other countries perspectives of their national security interests are not taken seriously or perhaps even considered at all.
President Trump wanted to put an end to these endless wars that at least in part, have amounted to a huge grifting operation where conflicts are deliberately drawn out to enrich military/congressional industrial money interests.
Trump rightly pointed out that NATO, while accomplishing a certain mission, has also bilked the United States for countless billions. Putin understood that Trump simply was not interested in further encroachments on Russia’s national security which is why Putin by and large behaved himself while Trump was in office. Putin seems to have had the opposite view of President’s Bush (43), Obama and Biden.
